Fall Decorating Ideas for Outside

Fall is here, and with it comes shorter days, cooler nights, and the spectacular colors of the changing leaves. If you are looking for ways to incorporate the spirit of the season in your yard or on your porch, look no further. Here are seven fall decorating ideas for outside your home.

  1. Seasonal wreath

Wreaths aren’t just for Christmas. An autumnal wreath is a beautiful way to subtly decorate for the season if spooky fake spider webs are not your thing. While many stores carry wreaths, you can also make your own by visiting a craft store and gathering supplies. Customize your DIY wreath by painting pine cones, adding straw and fake flowers, or filling spaces with fall colored beads; the choice is up to you!

  2. Painted pumpkins

Pumpkins are the perennial fall plant and appear everywhere, from your favorite latte to your front porch. You don’t have to stick to carving funny and scary faces into your pumpkin (though that is an excellent way to get out the delicious seeds). Painting your pumpkin is a fresh and modern way to display the classic fall gourd with a twist. You can paint it all one color, such as metallic gold, or paint traditional spooky fair, like a ghost or black cat, on its side.

  3. Fall flowersThe cooler weather doesn’t mean you have to abandon your green thumb. Chrysanthemum, colloquially known as mums, are the fall flower choice for many homeowners (and the birth flower for November). Mums come in a variety of colors, including red, orange, yellow, and white. A Cypress, TX, interior decorator recommends mixing and matching for a colorful fall spread or sticking to one color for a chic, sophisticated look.
  4. Unconventional flower boxes

While displaying a variety of chrysanthemums in your flower box is sure to bring the fall vibes, you can go a different route. Placing small gourds in your flower box is a unique and fun way to incorporate the fall foliage into your outdoor display. Small gourds in flower boxes are both easy decorations and adorable to look at.

  5. A collection of gourds

Pumpkins don’t have to rule the autumnal gourd scene. Consider displaying different gourds on your steps and front porch. You can find an assortment of gourds in different sizes and colors at most grocery stores throughout the fall season, so get creative with your display!

  6. Display dried florals

If tending to live plants gives you visions of dehydrated decay, consider arranging dried florals. Dried florals add a natural look to your front porch display, but don’t require a lot of maintenance. Additionally, they complement the seasonal change from vibrant summer to subdued fall.

  7. Corn off the cob

While corn is happily eaten throughout the summer and fall, you can also decorate with it. Flint corn, commonly known as Indian corn, is a colorful variety that can add vibrant texture to your fall display. You can tie the dried stalks together and hang them up on your door for a rustic fall wreath.

Fall brings cooler weather and the need for coziness. By incorporating the ideas above, you can decorate your outside space to reflect the festive season.
