August Home Improvement Checklist

Aug 10

Once August hits, you know that fall is around the corner. The lazy days of summer are dwindling down and it’s time to think about the home improvement projects you’ve been putting off all season. Depending on where you live, you want to take advantage of the August weather. Here are the best projects to tackle before September, as told by the pros:

  • Brighten your home’s exterior. Whether it’s indoors or outdoors, a fresh coat of paint can improve the look of any interior room or exterior. The only thing you have to worry about is the temperature and humidity index. Optimal painting temperatures range from 40-90 degrees Fahrenheit with a humidity index between 40% and 70% – perfect August weather! Nancy Lucas, a Sea Girt interior decorator, recommends using bright neutrals like ivory or cool green to create an inviting look.
  • Replace your roof. After a summer full of rainfall, your roof can suffer some damage. Give your roof a once over and take notice of any missing shingles, cracks, or holes. Shingles are best replaced in the heat so they seal correctly, making August the optimal time. Before you replace any shingles, make sure that any damage underneath of them is properly repaired.
  • Clean your gutters. While you’re inspecting your roof, check to see that your gutters are free of debris. From leaves to branches and bird nests, your gutter can collect dirt, causing them to work less efficiently come fall and winter. Once they’re clear, run a hose through the gutter to check for leaks. Leaky gutters could signal the need for a replacement.
  • Winterize outdoor furniture. If you’re storing summer furniture outside, wipe off any debris and hose the furniture down. Allow it to dry thoroughly, then use a heavy-duty tarp to cover the entire surface. Most outdoor furnishings are capable of withstanding the elements, but the tarp will prevent further damage from occurring.
  • Check your siding. Is your siding starting to peel? Are there noticeable holes or missing slacks? Has there been water damage? Do a thorough inspection of your siding before you make a decision on how to move forward with the project. The experts at Richmond painters can give you an idea as to whether you’ll need minor repairs or a complete replacement.
  • Inspect your windows. After you give your windows a proper cleaning, check the frame for any gaps and drafts. Your windows may need to be caulked from the outside so they are properly sealed for the coming winter months. If caulking the frame doesn’t stop the draft, you probably need to get the windows replaced.

All of these projects are best completed before the cold weather comes to town. Start crossing items off your August home improvement checklist now. For those of you that don’t have the time or simply want to enjoy what’s left of the summer, call on a trusted professional to help!
