Creating a Home Library

Feb 28

There is nothing better than unwinding with a good book in your hand. Unfortunately, with our hectic schedules and busy day-to-day lifestyles, it’s not easy to find the time to head to a local library, grab a good read, and relax. Fortunately, you can create a peaceful reading environment right in the comfort of your own home. It is fairly easy to build your own in-home library, which will give you the perfect setting for settling down after a long day.  Here are some helpful tips on how to create your own reading space.

  • Choose the right spot. In order to create the perfect library, you need to choose the room carefully. Ideally, you’d like to use a space that doesn’t have too much natural light and doesn’t allow for too much humidity. Your basement or attic are not ideal rooms for an in-home library due to the fluctuating levels humidity and chances of flooding in these spaces. An in-home office or spare bedroom with the right amount of natural light will offer the perfect setting for your collection.
  • Fill shelves with the right reads. Whether you are a natural book collector or are just beginning your book journey, there are many great places to find quality reads. You don’t have to shell out lots of money in order to start a collection! Search local thrift shops and flea markets for tons of significant reading material. You may even stumble across a few collector’s items. If you already have a healthy collection going, fill shelving units with your favorite books and magazines.
  • Accessorize! To incorporate a bit of personality into your library,  dot bookshelves with family photos or memorabilia you’ve picked up in your travels. For a more sophisticated look, accent with beautiful leather-bound books that don’t necessarily include interesting material, but look appealing nestled amongst your favorite reads. Use them alone, or as a way to elevate objects, such as lamps or vases, on other surfaces.
  • Find a comfortable seating space. While your book collection itself is important, the biggest factor is where you will be sitting and reading within your home library. If you are a fan of sitting up while reading, a comfy chair with cushions will give you the opportunity to sink in while you cozy up with your book. If you find yourself wrapped up in a book while you’re laying down, a simple sofa with comfortable upholstery and cushions will be your new best friend.  Add a soft, warm blanket to either of these options to wrap up in and the only other thing you will need is a cup of tea to tie everything together!

Building a home library may sound like a daunting task, but in reality, the process is quite simple. Develop your ideas within an existing room, build onto your book collection or start from scratch with easy to find material, decorate with books themselves, and create your ideal sitting space to complete the look. You will find yourself longing for the escape this room offers as you finish your day!
