7 Autumn Design Trends for Your Home

Oct 1

Autumn has arrived and with it some great opportunities for getting creative in your home.  Autumn brings with it many great ideas to incorporate into your home as you get your house ready for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas or whatever special occasion is just around the corner for you.

When we think of the colors of Autumn (orange, yellow, red, purple and light brown) and the image of leaves falling from trees and beautiful sunsets, it’s easy to see how Autumn can provide so much inspiration for our homes.

The challenge for you is to take these elements and bring them into your home.  Embrace what is around you and bring the great outdoors indoors this Autumn.  To help you, we have compiled a list of 7 Autumn design trends to consider for your home.

1. Wood burning stoves: Wood burning stoves get more popular every year and are a great way of making a real feature piece in any room of your home.  Wood burning stoves tend to come in two types; free standing or inset.  Both look great when lit and can really provide a warm look and feel to your home.  The heat and light provided by your stove also creates a welcoming atmosphere for any guests entering your home.  The cast iron finish can provide a great traditional finish, especially when surrounded by stonework.  You can also get home heating stoves in a range of colors and styles to provide a more modern feel to your home, meaning you can find almost any type of stove to suit any type of surroundings.

2. Wood: If there is one thing we associate with Autumn it is wood, and plenty of it.  From the bare trees that are in your garden or along your street to the blocks of wood you use to top up your fire at home, it’s hard to avoid the look, feel and smell of wood over the coming months.  One design trend we expect to see this year is the addition of decorative wooden features around many homes.  From wooden sculptures and clocks to traditional tables and benches, wooden accessories work great in all kinds of homes whether they are funky and modern or traditional and reserved.

3. Gold: Gold has made a big return to homes in 2013 and most interior designers expect this to continue into 2014.  This can be in many forms but expect to see more items being finished with a gold trim with furniture especially having elements of gold within them.  Gold is also a material that is often associated with wealth and luxury so incorporating this valued metal into your home can help create a more luxurious feel to your surroundings, ideal for when family and friends call round.  Consider using gold spray paint to touch up photo frames and mirrors and also to get creative on a blank canvas. Once your home accessories are shining, make sure your quality gold jewelry is shining as well!

4. Brass: Brass is another metal that will make an impact in homes this Autumn.  A very traditional metal, brass is making a bit of resurgence in homes as it is both affordable and stylish.  Brass can really help set off fixtures in the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen and is also a popular choice among many decorations for your living room.  Think of magazine stands and brass lampshades and the traditional look and feel that they add to any room.

5. Printed Faces: For those of you looking for something a bit different this Autumn then you may want to consider printed faces.  Printed faces are expected to be big this year in the fashion industry and this is expected to roll into the world of interior design with faces appearing on fabrics for your home.  From pillows, cushions and bed linens to chair covers, pictures and printed canvases, the use of faces can provide a real funky, chic, edgy look to your home.  They can certainly help create some interesting conversation if used in your living room or kitchen.

6. Bright to black: Another trend we expect to see continue to grow this year is the mix of bright, vibrant colors and black.  While this may not be to everyone’s taste, the use of light colors on a dark background can really help to create an impact in your home.  Using bright colors against dark walls or furniture can help to create a real impact and modern feel to any room.  Black is one color that can work with almost anything and works in any room in your home.

7. Mirrors: The final design trend on our list for Autumn 2013 is mirrors.  Use mirrors throughout your home and don’t be afraid to group together different sizes and colors of mirrors.  Groups in mirrors in three can work well in rooms as a feature while mirrors themselves will help to reflect light and brighten up rooms on a dull day.  Using mirrors to reflect natural light can also mean you don’t have to constantly have lights on as the dark evenings draw nearer.  Mirrors also work well when used with fitted furniture in your bedroom and they can also help create the illusion of space if you have a room that is on the small side.

If you are considering making some changes to your home this Autumn, be sure to keep these design trends in mind when it comes to deciding on what you will do in your home.
