How to Choose An Interior Paint Color

Jul 25

The interior of your home can influence your daily life and is a direct reflection of your personal taste and style. Because you spend a lot of hours in your home, how you decorate should not be taken lightly. Stemming from this is a crucial decision in the decorating of your home: choosing color.

There are many factors in choosing the perfect paint color, and while it may seem like a daunting decision, it can be broken down into a few simple judgment calls:

Start Small: Attempt to work off and incorporate colors included in your furniture (if your room furniture and accessories are already purchased). Take advantage of paint swatches, readily available at your local hardware or paint store. Spend time going through the swatches and holding them against your wall, putting aside the colors you prefer. If you can’t grasp the essence of a color simply through a swatch, purchase small samples and paint a section of your wall to get a better idea of how it will look in your room.

Mood: Consider the purpose of the room, and the type of ambiance you want to room to radiate. Social or intimate? Relaxing or dramatic? Each emotion calls for different color schemes. For example, you may wish to choose bright, contrasting colors for an entertaining area like a dining room, or deep, soothing colors for a bedroom. You will want to choose one dominant color, and other various accentual colors to complement that main color.

Lighting: The lighting of a room also affects the color of the walls. Look at your color options directly under both natural and artificial light. Different lighting will accentuate certain colors, so it is best to be conscious of what your walls will look like under both scenarios.

Get Inspired: To add significance to your home, think of colors that are especially memorable and symbolic to you – for example, a favorite art piece. Now, think deeper. Try and grasp exactly what the artist’s persona gave off in that particular piece, and portray that feeling using your home wall colors.

Play It Safe: If you will eventually be selling your home, it may be smart to give more neutral and dull colors a chance. This gives potential buyers more room for creativity and blending furniture, therefore, possibly giving them a better incentive to consider purchasing your home. Even if you’re not looking to sell your house, neutral colors are known to be natural “blenders,” and are also a good bet if you haven’t purchased furniture yet or may be switching furniture sets in the future.

The directions you can take when selecting an interior paint color are almost endless. Even if you don’t consider yourself to be a creative person, it’s possible to achieve a variety of artistic elements within your home.
