Winter Home Heating Tips

Dec 12

As we approach the official first day of winter, temperatures are sure to continue to drop; and when that happens, heating problems become more frequent. However, many of these common problems are preventable.

Follow the below winter home heating tips to ensure your home is ready for the freezing temperatures:

  • Purchase a Humidifier: During cold weather, increased use of your heat causes the air in your home to be drier than usual. Solution: purchase a humidifier, which will add needed moisture to the air in your house. Since moist air retains heat, you’ll save energy by not having to run your heat as often. As an added bonus, it can also improve your health if you have sinus problems, which are often linked to dry air. Be sure to clean and regularly replace the filters in your humidifier to maximize its potential.
  • Be Mindful of Fireplaces & Fans: Fireplaces are great for setting a warm, cozy ambiance in your home. However, they can waste energy by pulling warmer air out of the house and up through the chimney. When you’re not using your fireplace, make sure that the damper is closed and keep the doors shut. Be mindful of your exhaust fans, as well, as they can cause drafts. Run them as sparingly as possible, and keep them off during colder weather to avoid pulling warm air out of your house.
  • Get a Professional Heating Tune-Up: The best defense is a good offense, so be proactive and get your heating equipment serviced by a reputable company at least once a year. A heating tune-up includes inspection of the gas systems, the air handler, the wiring, and the filters. Routine inspections like these can help prevent costly repairs and replacements down the road.

This winter, make sure your heating system is prepared for the freezing weather. For more information about gas or oil heat, contact Bucks County heating company Dwyer at 215-248-4300.
