Energy-Proofing Your Home

Dec 6

Did you know that the average homeowner wastes $750 every year in energy costs? With winter weather upon us, now is the time to energy-proof your home so you can use less energy and lose less money on your energy bills:

  • Seal Your Leaks. Most homeowners know which windows and doors are drafty; but most of a home’s leaks occur through the floors, walls, and ceilings. The easiest way to identify the leaks is to look for spider webs. Spiders spin their webs wherever insects enter your home; so where there are webs, there are usually leaks. Grab your caulking gun and start the search. For those leaky doors and windows, purchase a draft stopper – a cotton and foam product that prevents cold air from sneaking in.
  • Swap Your Lighting. Change out your five most used light bulbs for LEDs or CFLs. Also, as obvious as this sounds, turn off the lights whenever you leave a room. Put your outdoor lights on times or sensors so that they are only in use when needed.
  • Install a Programmable Thermostat. While you’re working all day, your heater should not be. Program your thermostat to kick on 30 minutes before you get home from work. This will ensure you’re not wasting energy to heat an empty house while allowing you to come home to a comfortable temperature.
  • Improve Your Insulation. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends specific levels of insulation, depending on where you live, for those rooms in the house that border unconditioned spaces of the home, like the basement and the attic.
