How To Find Design Inspiration On Pinterest

Apr 26

We’ve been told that design inspiration can be found in the most unlikely of places, even if we aren’t looking for it. Sometimes, though, it feels like everything around you has been done before, or you’ve tried to incorporate that trend into your home with little to no luck. Fortunately, the internet can help!

Pinterest is the drawing board of the internet. You may have turned to it previously for holiday recipes or craft ideas for your kids, but Pinterest is a great place to find home decor inspiration as well. From tips on colors and patterns to DIY projects, you an find it all online. Here’s how to find design inspiration in the most effective ways:

  • Follow the right people. You’ll tap into the minds of some of the most creative individuals in the design industry. See what they’re working on or their favorite colors to work with. This will push you outside of your comfort zone and open the door to more eclectic designs you may not have tried before.
  • Find your focus. Pinterest can be a little overwhelming, particularly to someone who has never used it before. To avoid inspiration overload, create separate boards for each individual room/style/furnishing/accessory. As you add pins to each board, you’ll be able to go back and comb through them when you’re ready to tackle that design project. Keep an eye out for trends in your pins – if you notice you’re pinning a ton of gray patterned curtains, you know where to start!
  • Search specifically. When utilizing the search feature of Pinterest, be as specific as possible. If you’re looking for basement furniture arrangements, you should search those exact words. You can also phrase your search as a question, so “How to arrange furniture in a basement” will also turn up design ideas.
  • Let Pinterest work for you. When you sign up for an account, you can choose to follow boards that showcase your interests. If you’re lost as to where to start searching, let Pinterest inspire you! When you sign up, choose the boards that focus on interior design. When you log on, scroll through your home screen for ideas on colors, layouts, and furnishings.

When you feel like you’ve exhausted all of your typical places for inspiration, turn to Pinterest for ideas on refreshing and updating your home. For more design inspiration, schedule a consultation with Kathy McGroarty, a Collegeville, PA interior decorator.
