Insulation: Spray Foam vs. Traditional Fiberglass

Feb 24

Most homes have traditional fiberglass insulation because it’s inexpensive and has been the most popular option for years. However, a new type of insulation has entered the market and become more popular because of what it offers homeowners. It’s called “spray foam insulation” and it’s making a buzz around the house market.

Spray foam does exceptionally more than traditional fiberglass insulation. For starters, it not only insulates the house, but creates a barrier to air and sound, reduces mold and mildew buildup, increases energy efficiently and reduces the need for caulking in several areas around the home.

As a homeowner, you don’t want any outside air entering your home because it affects the temperature and how much you use your central air system. If you keep outside air out, then you will lower energy consumption and cut back on utilities.

Since spray foam creates a better seal due to its closed-cell components, it prevents moisture deposits from developing within the home, which can damage and ruin parts of a house. Traditional insulation doesn’t typically protect against moisture damage, or not well at least, which can be a real factor when trying to sell a house.

People want to purchase a house that has been well kept and protected. So if they notice the preventative steps you have taken to protect your house, then they are more likely to pay a higher price because the house is in better shape and is better protected.

Of course, there are pros and cons with both types of insulation. With traditional insulation, you pay less for the materials and installation, and with spray foam, you pay more for both. However, traditional insulation isn’t proven to protect against mold and mildew, to sound proof, nor increase energy efficiency. Spray foam insulation is proven to do all of that, which incrementally increases the value of a home.

So it’s really a decision based on price. Either you spend more to invest in a better product or you pay less and hope traditional insulation does its job.
