Colors That De-stress

Nov 1

Nothing brings on stress more than the thought of the holidays approaching. From inclement weather to bad driving conditions, in-laws visiting, and financial stresses, the weeks leading up to the holidays are some of the most trying for homeowners. Aside from booking a relaxing vacation for one, there are simple ways you can use color theory to lessen the tension around the house this year. Incorporate these colors to keep your home in balance:

  • Get beachy. The fall and winter call for deep colors, but there are ways to incorporate soft, mellow tones that embrace calmness.  Many find calmness in the peaceful colors you would find on a beach, with an endless view of aqua blue ocean water and soft beige sand. If these colors center your zen, use them throughout your home!  There are plenty of soft and neutral tones you can work into any setting to help create a calming effect.
  • Freshen with white. White is a popular color that can bring out a variety of moods.  While many are afraid of using white in their home décor, it can bring a sense of freshness and positive vibes that eliminate the feeling of stress.  To keep white furnishings and carpet protected, use a stain guard to prevent dust, dirt, and debris from ruining surfaces. For white walls, the expert Ogden-Layton, UT painters recommend having a fresh coat applied every 2-3 years for optimal whiteness.
  • Play with pinks. When you think of tranquility, envision bolder neutrals, like pink!  The right shade of soft pink is similar to beige; it can blend well with most colors and décor, promoting peacefulness.  Pink can be a feminine color, too, and when paired with the right accent, it can make any room feel refreshed.
  • Go green. The greens found in nature are quiet colors that can be comforting to look at, especially in the main area of your home.  Use a pale yellow or green in the living area to help keep stress at a minimum, especially if this where the main action happens day in and day out.

Your home is a safe haven and you should not feel the wave of stress hit you in the face as you enter.  Use these calming hues to keep your home merry and bright this holiday season. For more de-stressing decorating ideas, contact Erika Lee, a Cincinnati OH interior decorator.
