Our pets are more than animals – they are part of our families. When you consider the way your home is designed, you might think that it meets your standards, but what about the needs and desires of your pet? These decorating tips will help transform your home into an environment you and your pet will love!

Assess your home’s layout. The best way to ensure the safety of your pet in your home is to view the world from their perspective. Get down on all fours to see what your dog or cat sees on a daily basis! Keep your eyes peeled for anything that could be a choking hazard, as well as anything that could strangle, electrocute, or suffocate your pet. Things like window cords and electric cables should be kept tucked under furniture or secured to the wall so that your pet is deterred from fussing with them.

Take notice of how your furniture is arranged. Pieces placed too closely together could create a “ladder” for your pet to get from one level of your home to another. For example, an ottoman placed too closely to a bookshelf could quickly become an obstacle course for your pet. Try to eliminate creating “ladders” that grant pets access to unsafe zones, like kitchen counters and tabletops.

Decorate with caution. Consider all of the decor you’re using around your home. Are your photos affixed securely to your walls? If you’re decorating with plants, make sure that the varieties you’re using are pet-friendly. Certain plants can be deadly to cats and dogs. For instance, lilies, poinsettias, and mums are all poisonous to cats. Do some research before incorporating any floral arrangements into your home decor.

Find the right fabric. Opt for furnishings and floor coverings that are going to be easy to maintain for you and safe for your pet. Look for stylish accent chairs and ottomans in easy-care leather or ultra-suede. This upholstery is super easy to wipe clean and won’t show the wear-and-tear pets can cause. If you’re happy with your existing furniture, invest in “throver” furniture covers, which come in a variety of colors and patterns and help keep your furniture safe!
