Getting Organized in 2017

Jan 31

Organizing your home can be a daunting task, but it’s a necessary evil. For those of you whose New Year’s resolutions have fallen by the wayside, keep your home clean and organized home with these easy-to-commit-to organization tips:

  • Have a dedicated space for everything. Each item in your home should have its own place so that it’s convenient for you to access when you need it. For example, keep spare trash bags in the bottom of your trashcan or in a kitchen cabinet within close proximity. Likewise, important files and forms should be kept in a dedicated office space. For added protection, store them in a fire-safe bin. No matter how big or small, designating a storage space for every item in your home makes it easy to find the things you need, when you need them. It’s also a lot harder for clutter to form when everything is in its place!
  • Set up  “drop zones” near your front door. The entryway to your home is the first thing guests will see, and it’s also a space that tends to turn into a catch-all. To avoid a build-up of clutter, create a space to stow everyday items like coats, shoes, backpacks, and purses in an organized fashion. Use a decorative hutch or place wicker baskets under a slim table. Use wall space to your advantage for items with smaller footprints, like mail and key rings.
  • Lay to rest the junk drawer. There’s one in every home across America – the designated “junk drawer.” Find your drawer and make time to go through it. Throw things away that you haven’t touched in ages. Simplify your collection of take-out menus, business cards, pieces of scrap paper, pens, and pencils. Use drawer dividers to make this process simpler. Once you have the drawer organized, consciously avoid using it as a toss-all for random household items. When you’re looking for the menu to your favorite Chinese place, you’ll know exactly where to find it!
  • Sort through your wardrobe. Don’t let your closet remain an unorganized mess just because it’s behind closed doors. Separate your clothes into large bins grouped by season and swap them out when the season changes. This will simplify your closet creating more space and make it easier to find things. To keep your everyday wear organized, install a closet organizer that features shelves, drawers, and hanger racks. You can also have your closet organizer custom-designed to fit your needs and inspire you to keep your clothing in order all year long.
  • Stay on top reorganizing. Life gets in the way sometimes, making it easy to become unorganized. To avoid a matter clutter overall, set up a schedule that dedicates time to reorganizing or sorting through things as they build up. This allows you to take a larger task and break it down into a more manageable task you can fit in every now and again.
