Green Cleaning Tips for the Home or Office

Apr 1

Cleaning products are everywhere in homes and offices. We use them for floors, dishes, furniture, windows, and even our bodies. Many of the old petroleum-based cleaning products have shown to have numerous health and environmental risks. While they may be powerful, there are more eco-friendly ways to get your home or facility clean and do your part to protect the environment as well:

Use Eco-Friendly Products: With the green movement gaining popularity, more and more eco-friendly cleaning products are competing for storage under your kitchen sink. Many of these products are non-toxic, made from renewable resources, and biodegradable. If you’re a do-it-yourselfer, mix vinegar and baking soda with warm water to create an all-purpose cleaner.

Use Antibacterial Cleaners Cautiously: According to the FDA, antibacterial soaps do not work any better than regular soap and water. The antibacterial soaps run the risk of breeding super germs during cold season if they survive the wash from the chemicals, and produce a stronger version of the germ.

Take Advantage of Baking Soda: Baking soda can not only be used to eliminate strange smells coming from your refrigerator, but it can be used to eliminate odor from carpet as well. Whether you’re battling a spill or a pet smell, simply sprinkle some baking soda on the carpet, let it sit, and vacuum it up.

Toss Your Cleaners Carefully: When you replace your old cleaning products, don’t just assume that they are safe to throw away in the trash. Pouring chemicals down your drain may mean that they could end up back in your water supply. Make sure you read the labels on the chemicals for disposal instructions, and if they cannot go out with your usual trash, check with your community to see when the next toxic material/electronic disposal date will be.

Clean Your Air Naturally: Forget about store bought air fresheners that emit chemicals into the air. Instead try techniques such as boiling cinnamon, cloves, or any other type of herb with a scent you enjoy. Plants may not change the scent of your home, but they are a great way to filter the air indoors.
