The Dangers of Lead Dust

Mar 27

Children exposed to lead for extended periods of time can develop learning disabilities, behavioral problems, and diminished intelligence. This is especially dangerous because symptoms rarely present until the damage has already been done. Since childrens’ bodies absorb lead more easily than adults, it impacts children more profoundly. Adults who inhale lead dust may suffer reproductive problems, nerve damage, weakened memory, muscle and joint paint, and hypertension.

To lower the risk of lead contamination, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) set forth a Renovation, Repair, and Painting Rule (RRP Rule) which states that contractors performing renovations, repairs, or painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes, schools, and childcare facilities built before 1978 (when lead-based paint was outlawed) use certified renovators trained by EPA training providers to follow lead-safe work practices.

The EPA wants homeowners to Renovate Right. Here’s how contractors can get EPA RRP Certification:

  • Download the RRP Certification application from the EPA website. You can also complete the application online here. Mail your completed application with the $300 application fee to U.S. EPA, Lead User Fees, P.O. Box 979072, St. Louis, MO, 63917.
  • Undergo eight hours of training, including two hours of hands-on training with an EPA-approved training provider. Check out the schedule of RRP Certification Courses at American Patriot Safety Training & Consulting.

The EPA will evaluate your application and send an approval letter with your certification within 90 days.
